Introduction to Widgit
Widgit Resources supports inclusion and gives readers of all literacy levels greater access to information.
The simply-drawn, colourful symbols each illustrate a single concept clearly and concisely. They cover various topics (including many curricular areas) wide enough to make them suitable for symbol users of all ages and abilities.
Widgit Symbols can be used in any environment, including classrooms, healthcare settings, or at home, to create a variety of symbol materials and visual supports.
With the Widgit symbol, support can aid communication, understanding, learning, and independence and help learners realise their full potential.
The Widgit worksheets are highly visual, varied, and differentiated and include Widgit symbols to help you make the curriculum accessible for all learners. They are available to support a range of curriculum subjects, such as History, Literacy, Science, and Geography. They also cover many areas beyond the curriculum that learners with SEND can find challenging, such as Keeping Safe, Communication, Sequencing, Behaviour, and Time (Calendars).

Widgit Case studies
What has been the impact of using Widgit across the school?
'We want the children to be articulate and we use Widgit symbols to help teach vocabulary specifically and support group talk, and we want the children to be empowered, and that is through being able to participate in all the lessons without feeling marginalized or that they have needs that can't be met. And the use of this technology helps to support that aim'

What have you been doing regarding communication using symbols?
'We use it to promote self-awareness. We use it within their independence so that they are able to communicate what they need for an activity, what they might like for an activity, whether that is within our learning opportunities, whether that's in their choosing time. we're always promoting their communication and enabling our students to feel a sense of independence and a sense of being listened to.'
