LET'S DANCE! BALLETBOYZ INSPIRATION FOR KS2 TEACHERS NEW TO DANCE
Crispin Ashford is a non-specialist Year 4 teacher who used the new BalletBoyz material with his class to great effect. The resources stretched Crispin and his class in more ways than one, and now they are all on fire for dance.
What did you do?
-
New action plan and staff audit coincided with opportunity to work with BalletBoyz materials to support less confident staff
-
Mixed-ability Year 4 class chosen to follow BalletBoyz as a unit of work in the PE curriculum.
-
Used videos, supporting materials and differentiated tasks to immerse the class in an area where the teacher felt most out of his comfort zone.
Why did you do it?
The cohort of students targeted were all characterised by their school maths teachers as underachieving level 4/5 students. The aim of the ‘Bootcamp’ was to:
- Improve achievement for students who fall behind in mathematics.
- Encourage students to seek mathematic opportunities in further education.
- Reconnect students with mathematics to find enjoyment of mathematics by making it relevant.
- Encourage students to engage with their peers from other geographic areas around the country.
- Improve conceptual understanding and thereby deepen student’s awareness of mathematic connections.
The challenge
The students came from 5 different schools; 3 from London, one from Birmingham and one from Milton Keynes.
The students needed to adapt to new technology, new teachers and new students in their class.
The loaned equipment from Google was being used on an office environment wifi infrastructure.

What was the impact on learning?
-
The materials helped pupils develop fundamental movement, rhythm and musicality, and inspired them to express themselves creatively.
-
Pupils attempted and succeeded in activities that neither they nor their teacher would have thought possible.
-
There was universal and clearly documented achievement for all learners.
Quote from Crispin Ashford
"We believe in the positive role that arts can play across the whole curriculum. These resources ensure that no learner is limited by the skillset of their current teacher"
