Case Study: Polar Exploration Insight
At Exning Primary School, they believe their topic-based curriculum delivery has been truly enhanced by using LGfL online resource content. They would recommend you try it too!
This case study shows how through their use of the ‘Polar Exploration in the Heroic Age of Scientific Discovery’ resource they have given their pupils a unique insight into the most famous polar expeditions of the 20th Century.
The outcomes
They found the mix of video footage and high-resolution photographs of equipment and artefacts from the most famous expeditions, journal extracts, and interactive maps complemented their use of the Class VR Virtual Reality headsets and also reduced teachers’ planning time. They believe the pupils were more immersed in the topic than previously and they even extended the time they spent on this unit of work due to the high levels of engagement and learning outcomes they witnessed.
Quote from Emma Hardy
"Interest and engagement from the children, teachers and other adults was so high we ended up extending the initial allocated number of weeks for this unit of work."
Cloud Migration - cost savings through careful investment in cloud technologies.
In discussion with governors and staff, we began to realise that the decision to go with LGfL meant that we could actually save money overall as the range of included services replaced and often improved on existing services we no longer required because they or something similar are included in the LGfL package. We also realised that through embracing cloud technologies we could phase out all or our servers located at school and transition to working through cloud platforms.
How did Exning use the LGfL Resources?
-
Listened to the explorer’s diary entries and experiences
-
Studied the maps to plot the journeys of the Nimrod, Endurance, Discovery and Tera Nova expeditions
-
Read the artefacts book to compare modern explorers’ equipment with those of Scott
-
Class VR headsets to immerse the children in the Antarctic conditions
-
Class VR headsets to identify features of the Gentoo Penguins (Science)
-
Class VR headsets and Co-spaces - coding Antarctic environments and ‘newly discovered species’
Quote from Emma Hardy
"The Polar exploration unit has covered so many areas of the curriculum, we have now ensured it is a permanent fixture on our Upper Key Stage Two curriculum map."
