Universal Design for Learning

Removing barriers to learning

LGfL is committed to promoting the principles behind Universal Design for Learning as first framed by CAST

About CAST

CAST is a non-profit education research and development organisation that created the Universal Design for Learning framework and UDL Guidelines, now used the world over to make learning more inclusive. The acronym "CAST" derives from the original name of our organisation, the Centre for Applied Special Technology. Since its founding in 1984, CAST has seeded and grown the field of Universal Design for Learning through creative research and development, strategic partnerships, teacher preparation and support, and international outreach.

What is UDL and why is it important?

'It's an offer for everybody, it's not just specialist kit anymore just for the students who've got barriers to learning. This is something which is there. It's there in people's pockets everywhere they go. And it should just be there in every classroom, in every school. And yes, I'm talking about from EYFS up.'

John Galloway (Inclusion Consultant) & Carol Allen (Education Advisor for IT and Inclusion)

UDL - Removing barriers to learning

'We are all gatekeepers. The decisions that we make ultimately influence the progress of a child more than anything else. And that's us; that's within our power.

We all have a positive role to play. Of course, technology can play a massive role in effective, inclusive practice with the right pedagogy:

So in summary; Connect with your learners, and present so they can understand and give opportunities for them to express their learning in the most effective way'

Bob Usher - LGfL Content Manager
